As I drove to work I noticed that the number of 'wild things' that were visible in the morning was increasing. The snowbanks along the roadside are shrinking faster and the dried fall grasses are beginning to show. The little rodents that lived beneath the grasses are on the move.
A couple of mice scurried from one side of the road to the other. Further up the road a couple of squirrels raced for their lives from one ditch to the other in front of my vehicle.
I passed by an acreage and saw a large white-tailed deer on the front lawn of a home. It looked like a decoy until I slowed and it turned it's head. It was a beautiful scene. I wondered if the homeowners noticed their visitor.
Two moose were in a bog area feeding on the tasty willow branches. A third one lay in the snow behind a little two foot tall willow. Across the road, a coyote hunted for breakfast.
Ravens, magpies and crows were perched in some treetops. They swooped down to the ditch and returned to the trees. Their target was a deer carcass that had been hidden beneath the snow through the winter.
All this action in one morning. Warmer temperatures, longer daylight hours and increased wildlife activity is making me a very 'happy camper'.
