Mother Nature's Entertainment

I left the house at 8:30am with the intention of snapping some wildlife photos.  I was hoping for bison, moose or deer.

I got to the park as the sky was clearing and the sun's rays were peeking through.  My vehicle was the only one on the park highway.  I got to the trail head. The only thing I heard was the sound of silence.  A half hour into my hike; a switch turned on and the forest awoke.

A raven flew overhead.  I could see the detail on it's feathers and I could hear the wind move over its wings.  The coyotes were awake.  They serenaded me from a distance.  It's not often that I hear their calls during the daylight hours.

I got to the beaver pond.  Bison tracks crisscrossed through the open untouched snow.  The tracks were there, but no bison.

Blue jays called from the tops of the evergreens.  "Cheeseburger" calls came from the stands of birch trees where the chickadees were busy flitting from tree to tree in search of food.

The only signs of moose on the trail were some chunks of hair that had fallen out and the poop that I had to step over carefully.  It is not a fun task to have to pry the moose 'pecans' from the spikes of my hiking cleats.

There was an abundance of squirrels.  They scurried up trees, chased each other from branch to branch and chattered at me as I walked by.  A number of them were searching out their stores of hidden food.

I got home to find the birds busy at the backyard feeders.  The blue jays were loading up on nuts in the tray feeder and the downy woodpecker was pecking at the suet.

The warmer temperatures signaled the pine grosbeaks that it was time to leave the yard.  I've not seen them for a few days now.

My intention to photograph bison, moose and deer was a bust but the day was beautiful and the squirrels and birds were entertaining.

The three hours spent outside was filled only with the sounds of nature.  I didn't get the photos that I set out for but the time spent outside this morning was very relaxing; definitely no complaints from this rambler.
