It's January 9 and it was -5C on the drive home today. What is going on with the weather? For three quarters of the drive home I had to deal with freezing rain. A layer of ice kept building up on the windshield so the defroster was cranked to high to try and melt the ice off. I was roasting like a turkey. Ice was caking up on the wipers so they were doing a poor job of keeping the windshield clear.
I got home to find a layer of ice on my deck so had to try out some of my skating moves on snow boots. Shortly after I arrived, the wind picked up and snow started falling. I'm sure the drive in to work tomorrow will be interesting if the temperature drops as the weatherman says it's supposed to.
On the positive side, it is great to see that the days are noticeably longer. The extra light allowed me to see how the wind sculpted the snow along the ditches and fields. The banks along the roadside resembled sand dunes in a desert. In the open areas, the snow drifted across the road. The extra light is also going to allow me to get some snowshoeing on weekdays after work.
There's 69 days between today and the first day of spring. That's 2 months and 9 days of winter. After counting off the days on the calendar, I realized that I better start taking advantage of as many outdoor days that I can before the snow starts melting. That also means that I only have 2 months and 9 days of planning what is going to happen to my backyard.
Either way, my crystal ball tells me that there are days of relaxation ahead. I choose to look at each day, like a glass half full instead of half empty; no matter what it brings.
