This past week I visited the Strathcona Wilderness Centre and photographed the patterns and designs being created in the snow by the wind.
Today the sun was shining and the sky was cloudless. I went back to the snowshoe trail with another artful purpose in mind. This time I wanted to see what the sun was creating.
The trail was quiet except for the forest creatures. The chickadees were out gathering seeds. A squirrel came out of hiding and was chattering at me. It was going out on a limb, making sure that I wasn't coming close to its store of winter food.
As I trudged further into the forest, I could see that the sun's warm rays were creating some art of their own. The tree branches were holding the remains of the last heavy snowfall and the sun was carving sculptures out of it.
The first one that I came across resembled a squirrel. It leaned against the tree trunk, front paws behind its back, and tail in the air. Could it be a game of hide and seek?
Just up the trail I found sculpture #2. Possibly a deer hiding from that squirrel?
Sculpture #3 was high above my head on a branch. Mama bird ready to take flight when the squirrel comes looking for her?
Sculpture #4 was possibly old man winter reaching out of a snowbank, ready to pluck the pussy willows off the branches.
The next time you are heading out for some exercise and fresh air, leave all thoughts of your to-do list at home and take only your imagination with you. You'll come back rejuvenated with a different perspective on your surroundings, even if it is in your own neighborhood. Who needs the art gallery when mother nature's art is all around us. We just need to take notice.
