As I was watching the huge snowflakes fall this morning, I was daydreaming of spring. The days are noticeably longer. The garden magazines arrived in the mail. I was envisioning the possibilities for my backyard. Instead of planters filled with bright blooms, I'm going to have a big mud hole.
The deck behind the old house had built-in planters that would overflow with colorful wave petunias. Scarlet runner beans grew tall on willow lattices. The hummingbirds would fly from blossom to blossom taking in the sweet nectar.
This spring will start off another year of construction except that it will take place outside instead of inside.
I have to start putting ideas together for my backyard retreat. So many ideas. So little time.
I want to create 'outdoor rooms' in the yard. There needs to be little nooks where benches can be placed. I want rock pathways to join all the rooms together. There needs to be planters and containers filled with blooms so the hummers and the butterflies will visit.
The yard needs to be as close to maintenance free as possible. I plan on being able to sit and enjoy it rather than be a slave to the weeds.
I've got a few months to contemplate what the first step will be. For now, I'll keep daydreaming.
