The snow didn't keep the deer away. It did cover over their grain tub but those wet little noses worked like radar and directed them to the exact spot. The deer food was not the only thing covered over. The tray feeder filled with sunflower seeds had a couple inches of snow on top of it. Those little chickadees were having a difficult time trying to find their seeds. I have two suet feeders hanging in the yard. There were 4 downy woodpeckers visiting them at the same time; two at each one. When they left, the hairy woodpeckers arrived for their turn. On the way to work today I saw a lone white tail deer making its way across a farm field. The poor thing was having a difficult time maneuvering its way through the deep snow.
There were a lot of tracks through the snow in the wide open spaces. Deer, moose and coyotes had been searching for food. When I see all those trails, it amazes me to think about all the animal action that happens through the night.
If the forecast is accurate, the snow is supposed to let up overnight. That means the shoveling needs to get done first thing and then some trail time. I'll be out there no matter what the temperature is. It's been too long.
